
There is also a very strong possibility that Radiant Silvergun will be coming to the United States for the PlayStation sometime in the future. Saturn (with the help of a GameShark, or alternatively, you can use the 4-in-i carts mentioned in this month's Letters section). Since it doesn't require a RAM cart, you can easily play it on your U.S. If you get a chance, you should import this gem. The more chains you get, the more powerful your weapons will become-you'll get more shots, more power and more area of effect (i.e., wider shots).
#RADIANT SILVERGUN SERIES#
When you hit a series of enemies in a row, you'll be awarded with chain combos. Instead, you'll have to earn more powerful weapons by being efficient in combat. Radiant Silvergun doesn't offer power-ups to strengthen these weapons. And since this is a fast-paced shooter, you have to make those decisions quickly. Since each weapon is very different from the next, you have to be constantly making decisions as to which weapon will work the best in the current situation. While this may seem like a bit of a spoiler, it lends to some pretty interesting techniques. But instead of picking up power-ups or icons to get these weapons as in most other shooters, you get them all right off the bat. This one- or two-player simultaneous game offers you seven different weapons (see sidebar). Not only does it sport some fantastic graphics and controls, but it has some fresh ideas that should please fans of the genre. Radiant Silvergun is Treasure's ( Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes) latest work of art. The bad news: The latest great 2D shooter is only available in Japan. It received a spiritual sequel in the form of Ikaruga (2001), and was ported worldwide to the Xbox 360 in 2011.The good news: Great 2D shooters live on. In retrospect, it is considered one of the greatest shooters and Sega Saturn games of all time. Journalists agreed that the game revived the shoot 'em up genre, which had fallen by the wayside after the rise in popularity of arcade fighting games in the 1990s.

Despite its region exclusivity, Radiant Silvergun was imported by Western critics and received critical acclaim. The Saturn port was released two months later in Japan. Treasure president Masato Maegawa went in person to arcades to gauge the reaction of players. Radiant Silvergun was first released in Japanese arcades in May 1998.

Towards the end of development, the team recruited professional gamers that held high scores in shooters to play test the game. Distinctiveness doesnt guarantee quality but, in this case, its backed by radiant brilliance. The game was developed for the ST-V arcade board first and later ported to the architecturally similar Sega Saturn. Radiant Silvergun stands, as with so much of Treasures output, alone. Radiant Silvergun was developed by ten people, with Gonzo outsourced for animated cutscenes. Despite the company's concerns about the financial viability of arcade games and the shooter genre, they felt they had a good premise for a game and decided to pursue it. Treasure was primarily known for developing action and platform games for home consoles before Radiant Silvergun.

The stages are tightly designed to present players with scenarios that can be approached differently with the various weapon types. The player hosts an arsenal of six different types of shots to choose from, and a sword to destroy nearby targets.
